The Cleveland Browns have tapped the open market to fill another need on their patchwork offense.
Free-agent tight end Rob Housler and the Browns have reached a one-year deal, the team announced on Thursday. The contract is worth $1.76 million, including $750,000 to sign, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, via a source who's seen the deal.
The former Arizona Cardinals target fills a void for the Browns, desperate for a pass-catching tight end after Jordan Cameronsigned with the Miami Dolphins.
The only other players under contract at the position -- Gary Barnidge and Jim Dray -- are blocking tight ends with limited upside in the passing game.Â
Still desperate for difference makers, the Browns remain a candidate to nab another developmental tight end in the draft, but the prospect list at that position is far from enticing beyond Minnesota's Maxx Williams.
