Quick Take: Lions at Bengals

Keep your eye on ...

Lions RB Kevin Smith: Veteran RB Tatum Bell struggled with the first team, but Smith, the Lions' third-round choice out of Central Florida, showed some promise, rushing for 22 yards on eight carries. Smith will surely see more reps as the Lions' offensive line continues to work on its zone-blocking scheme.

Lions kicker Dave Rayner: Detroit's solid 16-year veteran kicker Jason Hanson strained his thigh last week so the Lions brought in Rayner, who joins his fifth team in four years.

Rookie LB Keith Rivers: Rivers held out the first 10 days of training camp but looked sharp when he joined the team on the field just before halftime of the preseason opener. He collected a team-high seven tackles.

The Bengals' start: In their preseason opener Monday night against the Packers, the Bengals first team appeared listless. One of last season's high-powered offenses failed to get a first down in the first quarter and the revamped 2008 defense made Green Bay look good by missing easy tackles.
