North Carolina State coach Dave Doeren will wait to name his QB

New North Carolina State coach Dave Doeren will not announce his starting quarterback until Aug. 31, the day of the team's season opener against Louisiana Tech.

The news came in an email from the athletic department outlining media policies for the season.

Transfers Brandon Mitchell (from Arkansas) and Pete Thomas (Colorado State) are vying for the job.

Mitchell (6 feet 4, 239 pounds) graduated from Arkansas and transferred to NCSU this summer. He is the better athlete of the two and seems the best fit for the offense Doeren wants to run; the offense is similar to the one he used at Northern Illinois, which had dual-threat quarterback Jordan Lynch.

Thomas (6-6, 236) started for two seasons at Colorado State, then left that program after the 2011 season. He transferred to NCSU and sat out last season under NCAA transfer rules. He is a prototypical dropback passer -- the type of quarterback preferred by former Wolfpack coach Tom O'Brien, who was fired last December.
