'Inside Training Camp Live' whispers

Training camp is in full swing. Here are highlights from Saturday'stelevision coverage of Inside Training Camp Live and notes from our reporters in the field.

» In Tampa, the Buccaneers were set to kick off training camp, but the weather was not willing to cooperate, as NFL Media's Jeff Darlington quickly found out:

» Winston still addressed the media and shared his excitement at being named the Bucs' starting quarterback by coach Lovie Smith. Winston seems genuinely excited to be where he's at. "I'm just eager to play football, I just want to play," Winston said with a smile on his face.

Winston's wish was granted quickly as the Bucs' practice was rescheduled for later Saturday evening at USF, but was closed to the public.

» NFL Media's Albert Breer was in Florham Park for Jets training camp. Breer said rookie wideout Devin Smith will miss more than just training camp after breaking his ribs Friday. Smith will miss four-to-six weeks, Breer reported Saturday.

» Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer will be getting the normal amount of reps in training camp, according to NFL Media's Omar Ruiz, as he returns from an ACL injury that ended his 2014 season mere days after signing an extension to stay in Arizona.

» Check who showed up to Bears camp in style:

» The Bills' quarterback situation is as murky as any in the league. Between Matt Cassel, EJ Manuel and Tyrod Taylor, any of the three could be the team's starting quarterback when the regular season opens up. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport noted that Taylor's former coach John Harbaugh thought very highly of him during his time in Baltimore. Matt Cassel hasn't looked quite so sharp in camp as of yet and the same goes for Manuel, making Taylor's chances look pretty good.

» NFL Media's LaDainian Tomlinson was back at his old stomping grounds at Chargers training camp in San Diego along with Erin Coscarelli. The former first-round pick of San Diego spoke highly of running back Melvin Gordon, the Chargers' No. 15 overall pick in this year's draft.

"I expect to see a guy that's ready to take over, that's what they need from him," Tomlinson said of Gordon. "They drafted him, as you mentioned, 15th overall, because this running game was ranked 30th in the NFL last year. They have to find a way to create some balance on offense. Philip Rivers has been carrying this offense for awhile now, but they really need Gordon to from day one step in and produce numbers for this offense."

Tomlinson was able to also provide some insight into what it's like being a rookie running back at their first training camp.

"He has to find out the speed and tempo of the NFL," Tomlinson said. "There's no question, he has the skills to be a productive player. Now it's about learning the playbook, the most important thing, protecting Philip Rivers, and then everything falls in line after that."

Elsewhere at Chargers camp, safety Eric Weddle was making a run for Best Beard in Camp:

» Rex Ryan's Bills face the Patriots in Week 2 at a time when Tom Brady could be suspended. When asked by NFL Media's Rhett Lewis if he is hopeful he'd get to face Brady given their rivalry when Rex coached the Jets, he provided quite a humorous response.

"I'd rather see Steve Grogan," said Ryan. "We're not worried, we haven't given it any thought whatsoever. That's out of our hands and we don't spend anytime thinking of it. We're concerned with getting ourselves better but regardless of who it is we're gonna look forward to that."

» Niners linebacker NaVorro Bowman continued to show his stuff at training camp as he returns from an injury that sidelined him the duration of the 2014 season. Rapoport was on site in Santa Clara and spoke to coach Jim Tomsula about Bowman's progress.

"He is going to be on a little bit of a pitch count as Jim Tomsula said yesterday," Rapoport said. "As are a lot of the veterans. It's not gonna be much of a grinding camp as years past. But still NaVorro Bowman is going to take part. He passed the conditioning test yesterday. He's gonna take part (in camp) today ... His return is a big bright spot for this unit."

» Just in case you think NFL players are living large during training camp, let Panthers corner Charles Tillman put that to rest for you:
