Gary Kubiak rejoining Broncos in scouting department

Gary Kubiak is rejoining the Denver Broncos.

NFL Network's James Palmer reported Tuesday that Kubiak will be returning to the Broncos to assist with scouting. He coached in Denver the past two seasons. Kubiak will be based primarily in Texas. The team later announced Kubiak will hold the title of senior personnel advisor.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport added that Kubiak will be involved with scouting the top 100 offensive players, while Tom Heckert handles the top 100 defensive players.

"With as much experience as he has evaluating players, Gary's going to be a tremendous resource for our personnel department," Broncos general manager John Elway said in a statement. "He'll primarily help on the college side and assist us in free agency as well."

Kubiak cited medical reasons for his retirement from coaching in January. The 55-year-old was diagnosed with a complex migraine condition last season, which required hospitalization (he missed one game). He also suffered a mini-stroke back in 2013 as the head coach of the Houston Texans.

Upon his retirement, Kubiak suggested he'd be interested in working with Elway in some front-office capacity.

The hiring makes sense from every angle. Kubiak has intimate knowledge of the Broncos' organization. He played nine seasons in Denver, backing up Elway. He's been coaching in the NFL since 1994. Kubiak also has an eye for talent and knows what Elway is looking for in players.

"It's an honor for me to continue to be part of this great organization," Kubiak said. "John and I talked long ago about any opportunity like this, and I'm very happy to be able to contribute on the personnel side.

"I said when I left that I still wanted to be involved in football. This gives me an opportunity to be involved with the game, and I'm excited to get to work."

Two of Kubiak's sons also work for the Broncos. Klint is an offensive assistant; Klein is a Southwest area scout.
