Nick Chubb has found a new NFL team to join and he's staying in the AFC.
The former Cleveland Browns running back is expected to sign with the Houston Texans on Monday, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday, per sources.
Cleveland and Chubb had discussions prior to the 2025 NFL Draft, but the two sides could not agree on a deal, Rapoport noted. Chubb's move to Houston is pending with his physical, Rapoport added.
Chubb, a second-round pick in the 2018 draft, spent his first seven NFL seasons with the Browns. As a rookie, he showcased his dynamic ability out of the backfield, nearly rushing for 1,000 yards (996) and contributing 10 total touchdowns.
In his sophomore season, Chubb developed into one of the top running backs in the league rushing for 1,494 yards and earning his first Pro Bowl nod. He continued to be a true RB1 for Cleveland over the following three seasons, achieving three more Pro Bowl honors, as well as rushing over 1,000 yards and scoring eight or more total touchdowns. At the time, Chubb became one of the most dominant backs in the league.
However, Chubb's 2023 campaign proved to be a challenging one.
In a Week 2 Monday Night Football game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Chubb suffered a knee injury that forced him out for the rest of the '23 season. It was a devastating blow for Chubb as he overcame a similar injury to the same left knee in college at Georgia.
Even though Chubb missed the first six games of the 2024 season, Chubb returned to the field in Week 7 versus the Cincinnati Bengals. In his debut since the knee injury, he carried the ball 11 times for 22 yards and a touchdown.
Chubb finished the 2024 season (eight games played) with 102 carries for 332 yards and three touchdowns. He also contributed five catches for 31 yards and a score. Chubb ended the '24 campaign being placed on injured reserve due to a broken foot, forcing him to miss the Browns' final three games of the regular season.
Cleveland's decision to move on from Chubb was anticipated after Browns general manager Andrew Berry stated in May that a reunion with the four-time Pro Bowler was "increasingly unlikely." In the 2025 NFL Draft, the Browns selected running backs Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson to join Jerome Ford in the backfield.
With the Browns, Chubb's rushing yards (6,843) and TDs (51) are third in franchise history behind only Hall of Famers Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly.
Now, Chubb will get a fresh start with a Texans backfield that features Joe Mixon, Dameon Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale.
The NFL community could possibly see Chubb in a Texans uniform soon as Houston begins its mandatory minicamp on June 10-11.
