Eagles acquiring WR John Metchie III from Texans in exchange for TE Harrison Bryant, pick swap

Philadelphia is at it again.

The Eagles are acquiring wide receiver John Metchie III and a 2026 sixth-round pick from the Texans in exchange for tight end Harrison Bryant and a 2026 fifth-round pick, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Sunday.

The teams are actually getting their own 2026 selections back in the trade, as they swapped them as part of a trade involving cornerback Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and guard Kenyon Green in March, per Pelissero.

Metchie, a 2022 second-round pick, never quite found his way into the WR equation in Houston. He missed his entire rookie year after being diagnosed with leukemia, and returned as a rotational player for the past two seasons.

He's played 29 games (three starts) for the Texans since 2023, with 40 catches, 412 yards and one touchdown.

Last year, Stefon Diggs' one-year stint with the team served as a road block to playing time before the four-time Pro Bowler suffered a torn ACL. This year, it's the additions of free-agent signing Christian Kirk and Day 2 rookies Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel. Houston will move forward with those individuals, as well as star Nico Collins, Tank Dell when he's recovered from his knee injury and a long list of other depth options.

The Texans also add Bryant, a more-than-serviceable tight end with 877 yards and 10 TDs on 98 career receptions, in the wake of Brevin Jordan's season-ending injury. He replaces Jordan in a position group that includes Dalton Schultz, Cade Stover and Irv Smith.

Metchie's trade to the Eagles marks yet another savvy move by Philadelphia general manager Howie Roseman.

The Eagles love to make a move on a player they covet or see value in ahead of cutdown day, when they'd have to vie with 30 other teams for that player's attention. Roseman did the same thing last August when he acquired Jahan Dotson from the Commanders, and his trade for Raiders defensive back Jakorian Bennett is still less than two weeks old.

Roseman has now added two of Houston's early picks from the '22 draft in less than half a year, with Metchie set to rejoin his former first-round teammate, Green.

Metchie, a former Alabama wideout, will also be welcomed by plenty of Crimson Tide alumni in his new digs, starting most notably with quarterback Jalen Hurts and WR DeVonta Smith.

The Eagles move toward the season with a stacked WR room comprised of A.J. Brown, Smith, Dotson, Metchie, Ainias Smith, Johnny Wilson and others.

Competition pushed him out in Houston, but the defending Super Bowl champs believe he can find his niche with them.
