Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday that Newton is throwing to teammates in summer workouts in Baltimore.
Rivera elaborated on Newton's status to The MMQB when asked if Newton was on track to be completely healthy by the time training camp starts on Tuesday.
"I wouldn't say that, but he and the running backs and tight ends and receivers went up to Baltimore to do their getaway and work out for a couple days, and they threw it around," Rivera said. "And I know he's been throwing it. I'm not sure how much he's gonna throw. He's talking to the trainers about what that should be. I'm just pleased that there's an opportunity for him to start off and start off on the right foot."
A source informed of the situation told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Friday that Newton is expected to be ready to throw in training camp next week, but he'll be limited initially.
The updates on Newton are the first since last month when the quarterback played soft toss with team athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion. That event came with a heavily produced hype video.
Rivera's comment on Newton lacks detail on the quarterback's progress. We don't know how Newton is throwing, what routes, his velocity, accuracy, yadda, yadda, yadda. But knowing Newton is throwing ahead of training camp is a positive message that he remains on track to open the season.
