Anthony Weaver sick watching Dolphins' defensive tape amid 1-4 start: 'You want to throw up'

Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver gets nauseated watching his own unit.

"There are times in that game [Week 5 loss to Carolina] when you're watching tape and you want to throw up," Weaver said Thursday, via The Palm Beach Post. "Particularly because it's some of the guys that were making some of the errors. It was just, it was, it was unlike them."

The Dolphins defense has been one of the worst units in the entire NFL. It's a crew that doesn't do anything particularly well. Through five games, Weaver's unit has allowed 29.0 points per game in 2025 (27th in NFL), 386.6 total yards per game (29th), 174.2 rushing YPG (32nd), a 74.5 completion percentage (32nd), a 117.6 passer rating (32nd) and a 50.0 third down conversion rate (31st).

In Week 5, they were gashed by Carolina, allowing 418 total yards, including 239 rushing yards. It was a cavalcade of issues, from tackling problems to players in the wrong gap to simply getting blown off the ball.

Weaver is in his second season leading the Dolphins defense. In 2024, the unit finished fourth in yards allowed and 10th in points. This season they've cratered, with a pass rush that comes and goes, a run defense that has more holes than a block of Swiss cheese, and a secondary that is wafer-thin.

"I try not to do anything in anger and frustration," Weaver said. "I'm in the solution business. I'm in the problem-solving business. So I give myself 24 hours, right? There's 24 hours or certainly there can be a little anger, rage, but then you got to shake it off and you got to get back to all right, 'How do we attack these problems?'"

Weaver's Dolphins (1-4) host the Los Angeles Chargers (3-2) at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
