The Bengals could claim they won't trade Carson Palmer, but they have to enter this draft taking his threats to retire seriously. With the fourth overall pick, they should have a shot at one of the top two quarterbacks. If they secure one of them, maybe they trade Palmer and get a package a little better than the Donovan McNabb deal (at least a second rounder this year and one next year).Sooner or later, the Bengals need to replace running back Cedric Benson and middle linebacker Dhani Jones if they are both eventually re-signed. This could be the draft to get players at both positions. A safety with solid pass skills should be in the mix. Keep in mind, Cincinnati's coaches had the North squad at the Senior Bowl. There were a few good safeties in that game, namely Oklahoma's Quinton Carter and Temple's Jaiquawn Jarrett.

However, we don't expect him to be able to hit the deep out or zip the ball into tight coverage at the next level, so McElroy carries a late Day 3 grade.

The Lions have been pointed in the right direction since GM Martin Mayhew and coach Jim Schwartz took over. DT Ndamukong Suh was a brilliant selection, and now the Lions don't have to blitz to apply pressure. Now, the job is to build up the back seven. At least one linebacker and two secondary players have to come out of this draft.QB Matthew Stafford has missed several games due to injury in his young career, and an elite left tackle will be hard to pass up in the first round. Jeff Backus played well there, but at 33, it might be time to draft his replacement. While RB Jahvid Best had a very good rookie campaign despite playing through injuries, adding another running back could be in the mix. The problem for the Lions is they only have five picks. They might have to move down once or twice to create more picks to satisfy their needs.

The Titans' experiment with Vince Young appears over, which will set the franchise back a few years. Kerry Collins is too old to consider a 16-game starter, let alone build around. They will be lucky to see a top quarterback still available at the No. 8 spot and might have to settle for a second-tier quarterback who sits on the bench for most, if not all, of the 2011 season, which isn't a bad thing. In the meantime, defensive line help is a necessity for a team once built on defense. The Titans gave up 29 or more points in five of their loses and have some of their better veterans ready for free agency, which could complicate things. The Titans' defensive line coach, Jim Washburn, is now in Philadelphia, and we could see a Titan or two follow him there.

Green Bay won the Super Bowl with 15 players on injured reserve and multiple injuries in the big game. General manager Ted Thompson has done a brilliant job of building through the draft, and he will be at it once again. The challenge starts with deciding to pay some of his free agents, specifically Cullen Jenkins.Aaron Rodgers covers up a few deficiencies with his quick release and ability to escape pressure, but he also suffered a few concussions. It might be time to draft a solid pass blocker. Charles Woodson has been on a two-year run where he probably was the best defensive player in the game. However, he broke his collar bone in the Super Bowl and will turn 35 this year. Everyone seems to want a bookend outside linebacker opposite Clay Mathews, but defensive coordinator Dom Capers' creative scheme gets a lot of mileage out of guys like Erik Walden, Frank Zombo and Brady Poppinga.

I also hear middle linebacker Barrett Ruud will not be brought back, so a signal-caller who can play the Tampa 2 defense is important. CB Ronde Barber re-signed, but the team must find and develop the 14-year veteran's eventual replacement.

The Chiefs will face a first-place schedule and need to get better in order to duplicate the 10-6 mark that won the division a year ago. A young nose tackle like Baylor's Phil Taylor would make sense in the first round, especially considering how general manager Scott Pioli built the Patriots with defensive linemen taken early in drafts.A wide receiver opposite Dwayne Bowe would help open up the passing game and keep opponents from rolling coverage to his side of the field. I signed center Casey Wiegmann coming out of college as an undrafted free agent in 1996 and he is still playing at a Pro Bowl level. Even though he missed just one game over the last 10 years, it is time to add a young center. There might be a temptation to take an offensive tackle if a top prospect is still on the board at No. 21.

Kevin Colbert is so used to making draft picks late in rounds that he will find a way to secure at least three of their top needs without trading up.After the top two corner prospects (LSU's Patrick Peterson and Nebraska's Prince Amukamara), the run on corners could come when they're picking. The health of Willie Colon should determine what direction the team goes with the offensive line. In a perfect world, Colon moves to guard and a tackle like Mississippi State's Derek Sherrod is available.

The Chargers have been considered a deep team in recent seasons, often described as one of the best 53-man rosters in the league. I'm not sure that was entirely true. If fact, it might have been more of a function of coach Norv Turner and his staff as well as quarterback Philip Rivers overcoming issues on the offensive line and at receiver.San Diego currently only has six draft picks and a significant number of players scheduled for free agency. This could be a draft where the Chargers match a free-agent void with a rookie, and that can mean a struggle. While the Chargers got nine starts out of first-round pick Ryan Mathews, they got none from the other choices. In fact, the Chargers cut their fifth- and seventh-round selections, getting just seven active games from the rest of the draft class.

Free agency, trades and the draft were all used to transform this team, and they made the playoffs as 7-9 NFC West champs -- even won their first game against New Orleans. The top two rookie draft picks, Russell Okung and Earl Thomas, proved to be building blocks for the future.The quarterback situation could be resolved for the short term by re-signing Matt Hasselbeck, who threw seven touchdowns in two playoff games last year. But it just feels like Seattle is looking at a trade or to the draft at the position. Look for Seattle to draft two offensive linemen and plug them into the lineup early. Lawyer Milloy gave Carroll what he wanted from an experience perspective at safety, but at his age must be replaced. A cornerback, at the very least a nickel corner, is a draft priority.

The Saints have a solid roster and the addition of DT Shaun Rogers, if he's in shape and ready to take orders from defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, only helps the interior defensive line rotation. New Orleans should continue to focus on that side of the ball early in the draft, especially on the front seven.If free agency happens prior to the draft, it is possible the Saints' needs will change dramatically, because of the high number of players scheduled to hit the open market. With the fourth overall pick, they should have a shot at one of the top two quarterbacks. If they secure one of them, maybe they trade Palmer and get a package a little better than the Donovan McNabb deal (at least a second rounder this year and one next year).Sooner or later, the Bengals need to replace running back Cedric Benson and middle linebacker Dhani Jones if they are both eventually re-signed. This could be the draft to get players at both positions. A safety with solid pass skills should be in the mix. Keep in mind, Cincinnati's coaches had the North squad at the Senior Bowl. There were a few good safeties in that game, namely Oklahoma's Quinton Carter and Temple's Jaiquawn Jarrett.

With a new coaching staff and a starting quarterback who is not under contract, the 49ers are particularly hurt by the ongoing labor issues which prevent coaches from working with their team. Coach Jim Harbaugh is going to have to take some calculated risks in the draft. Harbaugh, a former NFL quarterback, will have choices to make with little information. The 49ers need an injection of young talent at cornerback, as Nate Clements is a high-priced veteran and Shawntae Spencer is probably better suited as the third corner.The defense will be a pressure package out of the 3-4 scheme, looking to disrupt the quarterback, which means the Niners will need an upgrade at outside linebacker. It's time to apply some roster pressure to Manny Lawson. Frank Gore is a workhorse at running back, but it's time to get a complimentary back for him following the hip injury that sidelined him last season. San Francisco leads the NFL with 10 draft picks.

The Titans' experiment with Vince Young appears over, which will set the franchise back a few years. Kerry Collins is too old to consider a 16-game starter, let alone build around. They will be lucky to see a top quarterback still available at the No. 8 spot and might have to settle for a second-tier quarterback who sits on the bench for most, if not all, of the 2011 season, which isn't a bad thing. In the meantime, defensive line help is a necessity for a team once built on defense. The Titans gave up 29 or more points in five of their loses and have some of their better veterans ready for free agency, which could complicate things. The Titans' defensive line coach, Jim Washburn, is now in Philadelphia, and we could see a Titan or two follow him there.

Jason Garrett is in his first offseason as head coach after going 5-3 as the interim coach during the second half of last season. Two picks from the 2010 draft -- WR Dez Bryant and ILB Sean Lee -- take pressure off the need at those positions this time around, but the Cowboys only got two starts out of the entire class.There are glaring needs at defensive end, offensive tackle, safety and cornerback. A big defensive end with long arms would be best in the Cowboys' 3-4 scheme, with players like Cal's Cameron Jordan or Wisconsin's J.J. Watt a good fit. Doug Free did a nice job at left tackle and is flexible enough to play either side, which gives them a wider range of tackles to choose from in the draft. In the secondary, the Cowboys have been looking for a safety who excels in coverage since Roy Williams was in Dallas, and a decision also has to be made on veteran cornerback Terence Newman. With three picks in the top 71, the Cowboys should hit their top needs.
