Texas Tech won't name starting QB until just before opener

Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury ended a four-day media blackout Friday by announcing that sophomore quarterback Michael Brewer was day-to-day after aggravating a back injury.

Brewer, who completed 34-of-48 passes for 375 yards and four touchdowns against zero interceptions as a backup last season, is competing with true freshman Davis Webb for the vacant starting quarterback job.

Not coincidentally, Kingsbury said he would not name a starter until just before kickoff of Texas Tech's season opener against SMU on Aug. 30.

Whoever wins the competition between Brewer and Webb should be wildly productive in Kingsbury's first season leading his alma mater. Texas Tech returns top wide receiver Eric Ward and plans to marry its longstanding and prolific Air Raid offense with a more up-tempo approach.
