Robert Mathis signed to one-year extension by Colts

The Indianapolis Colts won't get a contribution from Robert Mathis this season. That didn't stop them from deepening their committment to the veteran pass rusher.

The Colts announced Tuesday that Mathis has been signed to a one-year extension that now takes his contract through the 2016 season. Mathis' four-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs ended this week, but he is out for the year after tearing his Achilles tendon during a private workout earlier this month.

NFL Media's Albert Breer reported, via a source involved with the proceedings, that Mathis will get his full $6 million for this year while on the non-football injury list. His 2016 salary will also be $6 million.

Mathis, 33, was one of the best defensive players in football last season, leading the NFL with 19.5 sacks and earning first-team All-Pro honors. The Colts have managed eight sacks in their first four games without their top pass rusher.

Mathis continues to have a role with the Colts despite his injury. Coach Chuck Pagano called Mathis an "assistant coach" during his Monday meeting with reporters. An extremely well-compensated assistant coach.
