Robert Griffin III will be back this season for the Washington Redskins. That raises two immediate questions: 1. When will he be ready? 2. Will the Redskins let him start when he's healthy to play?
We are getting a better idea of the first answer. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport hears that Griffin's target return is within five to six weeks. That means Griffin could be ready before the team's Week 10 bye.
Whether Griffin plays right away likely depends on how Kirk Cousins looks in his extended run at starting quarterback. It's hard to imagine the Redskins taking Cousins out of the lineup if the Redskins are in playoff position. If the team is losing or Cousins' play is middling, it shouldn't be hard to go back to Griffin.
Though offseason trade rumors circled Cousins that never went anywhere, Rapoport reported, per a Redskins source, that the Redskins had at least one interested party for the third-year passer.
In a pre-Johnny Manziel world, the Cleveland Browns were will to offer a third-round pick for Cousins, which could have gone up to a second-round selection. However, general manager Bruce Allen never engaged in trade talks given RGIII's injury history -- he wanted insurance.
This story will quiet down for a month, but it's safe to say we'll be reading and hearing a lot about the Griffin/Cousins decision in the final months of the season.
