Redskins promoting Greg Manusky as DC

The Washington Redskins stayed in-house to hire their new defensive coordinator.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported Sunday that the Redskins will promote outside linebackers coach Greg Manusky to defensive coordinator, per sources informed of the team's decision.

This will be his fourth stint as a DC.

Manusky joined the Redskins in 2016 after four seasons as the Indianapolis Colts' DC. The 50 year old began his coaching career in Washington (as linebackerS coach) in 2001. He then spent stints as a defensive coordinator in San Francisco (2007-2010) and San Diego (2011) before heading to Indy.

The Redskins fired Joe Barry two weeks ago after a disappointing 2016 season. Washington ended the season ranked 28th in yards allowed. Barry's defense failed to force a turnover in four of the unit's final six games and allowed 140-plus rushing yards in the final three tilts.

The Redskins interviewed former Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine and ex-Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Rob Ryan before settling on Manusky for the job.

Manusky led middling defensive units in his three previous spots -- on average rating 18th in total defense and 17th in points allowed. The Colts never finished in the top 10 in total defense in his four seasons, per the Washington Post.
