The team is releasing the nine-year tailback, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a source. A boffo preseason by Terrance West made this move easier. Second-year runner Javorius (Buck) Allen figures to be the team's third-down back, with promising rookie Kenneth Dixon eventually working into the mix when he recovers from a knee injury.
We thought that Dixon's injury could save Forsett's spot, but this release is not a huge surprise. We pegged it as a potential cut before camp because of the depth of Baltimore's running back position and Forsett's $3 million salary. The move may not prove to be permanent, though. NFL Media's Aditi Kinkhabwala has been told the team is trying to bring Forsett back to the team, presumably at a lesser price.
The 30-year-old journeyman that found a home in Baltimore in 2014 with a Pro Bowl season that included 1,529 yards from scrimmage. Whether Forsett returns to the team or not, all those folks that took West in their fantasy drafts should be thrilled. He is looking like the team's Week 1 starter.
