Quick Take: Patriots at Giants

Keep your eye on ...

A Super Bowl rematch: The Patriots and Giants meet every preseason, but this will be the first time since the Giants' 17-14 win over New England in Super Bowl XLII.

Patriots QB Matt Gutierrez: Gutierrez made a bid to become the Patriots' backup QB with a 14-of-20, 217-yard, two touchdown performance against the Eagles Friday. Gutierrez has played mostly in the second half this preseason, so how much and when he plays will say a lot. Gutierrez's main competition, Matt Cassel, has yet to throw a touchdown this preseason and continued his shaky play against Philadelphia, going 8 of 14 for 60 yards.

Ray Ventrone: Ventrone is listed as a DB, but has seen considerable time at WR for the Patriots this preseason, including a four-reception, 49-yard performance against Philadelphia. Bill Belichick has used receivers as defensive backs (Troy Brown), so why not use a defensive back as a wide receiver? Knowing how Belichick values versatility, that may be Ventrone's ticket onto the 53-man roster, but he has competition in second-year WR C.J. Jones.

Mathias Kiwanuka's return to DE: The Giants' sack leader from last season was lost for the year with a knee injury and the team has chosen to replace him with Kiwanuka. The third-year pro played the position at Boston College and during his rookie season before transitioned to linebacker in 2007.

Giants backup TE Michael Matthews: While all of the attention has been focused in on starter Kevin Boss replacing Jeremy Shockey, Matthews' increased role also bears monitoring. If Boss is forced to miss any action with an injury, it would be Matthews who will be thrust into the starter's role and counted on to make plays.
