Quick Take: Panthers keep Saints winless

It was over when
John Kasay hit a 53-yard field goal -- the 10th game-winning field goal of his career -- to give the Panthers a 16-13 victory as time expired.

At halftime, Panthers wideout Steve Smith had only one reception for 9 yards. He caught only three more passes to finish the game with four receptions for 47 yards. But his 17-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter was huge, tying the the game for Carolina.

Key stat
Coming into the game, Carolina was converting on 38 percent of its third-down tries -- 23rd in the NFL. On Sunday, the Panthers were even worse ... at least until they woke up in the fourth quarter. Zero-for-six through three quarters, Carolina converted on all five of its third-down tries in the fourth.

Noteworthy
It was a tough day for Miami kicker Olindo Mare. He had a 20-yard field goal attempt blocked by Julius Peppers in the third quarter, and then he missed a 54-yard attempt with 2:12 remaining in the game. ... Panthers quarterback David Carr, who started for the injured Jake Delhomme, left in the second quarter with a back injury, but returned with just under a minute remaining in the first half and played the rest of the game.
