North Carolina State has suspended RB Shadrach Thornton for its opening game against Louisiana Tech.

Thornton, who led the Wolfpack in rushing last season, was suspended in June after he was arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge. He was reinstated recently, but new coach Dave Doeren said Wednesday that Thornton will miss the opener.

Thornton (6-foot-1, 203 pounds) played in 10 games last season as a true freshman, starting four times. He rushed for 694 yards and three touchdowns, and had four 100-yard games, including 114 against Clemson.

During spring drills, he vied with junior Tony Creecy for the starting job. Creecy (5-11, 210) rushed for 476 yards and five touchdowns last season, and should start the opener.
