Colin Kaepernick continues to show up to workouts for the San Francisco 49ers, despite not being able to practice after undergoing multiple surgeries.
Offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins said Thursday the team is waiting for the quarterback to get healthy before a full-fledged competition with Blaine Gabbert for the starting job begins.
"I have no idea," Modkins said when asked when he expects Kap to begin practicing. "We as coaches, our jobs are to coach who's out there on the field practicing. Whenever they say Colin's healthy, I'm sure he'll be there. He's around us, he's in the meetings, he's doing a great job. It's not up to me when he's released, so we'll see."
Kaepernick threw some passes for the first time during warmups on Thursday, CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reported.
Kaepernick had surgeries on his left shoulder, right thumb and left knee this offseason. He still is not cleared for practice.
"I think what's important is that he gets cleared when he's healthy, we'll go from there," Modkins said. "So, there's no timetable. Whenever they say he's healthy, he'll be out there."
Coach Chip Kelly said last month that his interactions with Kaepernick have been "fantastic," but the Niners haven't seen the athletic quarterback on the field running the new offense.
With Gabbert getting a head start this offseason, the more time Kaepernick misses, the more behind he'll be when the eventual competition heats up.
