With the Buccaneers in the driver's seat to nab Florida State's Jameis Winston with the top overall pick in the draft, is quarterback Mike Glennon on the way out of town?
Coach Lovie Smith confirmed during Wednesday's NFC coaches breakfast that clubs continue to call about the third-year passer.
"We've had the first pick and we've been taking calls for a long period of time, and I assume that would go right up until the draft," Smith said, per the Tampa Bay Times. "Yes, specifically on Glennon."
The Glennon trade whispers have flowed since last offseason, when the Arizona Cardinals were among several teams to speak with the Bucs about a potential swap prior to the 2014 NFL Draft. With squads like the Browns and Bills still looking for quarterback help, the door remains open for Tampa Bay to shop their young signal-caller.
The Browns would make for a compelling landing spot, but pairing Glennon with Josh McCown did little to lift the Bucs a season ago. Cleveland also has Johnny Manziel on the roster, but it's clear the Browns are still looking to pad the position after Rams coach Jeff Fisher confirmed Wednesday that Cleveland made a pitch for Sam Bradford.
Fisher noted that the Browns didn't offer Johnny Manziel as part of the deal, per ESPN.com's Pat McManamon, so it's possible Cleveland still believes last year's first-round pick can turn his career around after an offseason stint in rehab.
The Bills also loom as a potential target for Glennon, unless they feel comfortable hitching their wagon to veteran Matt Cassel. With Smith stating that multiple teams have inquired about Glennon, we also wonder if the Titans -- or even, again, the Cardinals -- have picked up the phone.
Glennon is far from a savior, struggling with accuracy last season and lacking on-field mobility. Still, his prototypical NFL build -- he's 6-foot-6, 225 pounds -- continues to attract coaching staffs curious about his potential.
Glennon stayed in Tampa last season because the Bucs never wound up adding a quarterback in the draft. Now poised to remake the position, Lovie and general manager Jason Licht will continue to listen to offers for their 25-year-old signal-caller. In an offseason flush with trade activity, Glennon makes sense as the next chip to fall.
