Is Mike Holmgren a candidate to coach the Raiders?
The former Packers and Seahawks coach told Seattle's KJR-AM on Monday that he visited the team's facility last week but "probably" will not be Oakland's next head coach.
Holmgren shares ties to the Raiders' front office through Reggie McKenzie, the team's embattled general manager who rose up through the ranks under Holmgren in Green Bay.
"I will hire the next coach," McKenzie said last week after firing Dennis Allen and announcing Sparano as Allen's interim replacement. Sparano on Monday told reporters that Holmgren visited at McKenzie's request to watch film and give a different set of eyes to things.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport noted on Sunday's NFL GameDay Morning that Oakland is on the hunt for a "rock star coach," confirming that the Raiders "will target" Jon Gruden, a longtime favorite of team owner Mark Davis.
Like Gruden, Holmgren also fits that so-called "superstar" model. On the heels of a disastrous but lucrative front-office run with the Browns, the 66-year-old Holmgren told The MMQB in July that he's "quote-unquote retired," before tweaking that to "semi-retired."
"That will be it, pretty much," Holmgren said. "Unless something big comes up."
