Both the Eagles and Giants lost Sunday prior to their meeting Thursday at MetLife Stadium. Each team led in the second half, only to see their games slip away. The Giants had won their first game in Week 4, spurred by Jaxson Dart's first start, and the Eagles entered Week 5 unbeaten.
Thursday night will be Dart's prime-time debut. He's given the Giants a boost, although the rookie QB had three turnovers in his last game. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts might be the reigning Super Bowl MVP, and he has only one turnover this season, but Philly's offense has gone into some long ruts lately.
The Eagles have beaten the Giants in seven of their past eight meetings, with the one Giants victory coming when Philly rested some starters in Week 18 of 2023. The Giants have lost 10 straight Thursday games and are one loss away from tying the Cardinals (11 straight Thursday losses from 1950-2013) for the longest Thursday losing streak in NFL history. The Eagles have won 10 of their past 11 Thursday games.
Three must-know storylines
1) This might be the spot for Barkley
Sunday's loss to the Broncos was shocking in that Saquon Barkley had only one carry in the second half, in spite of the Eagles leading for much of it. He finished with six carries for 30 yards, his lowest output since 2021, as a member of the Giants. Barkley is now averaging a stunning 71.9 rushing yards fewer per game so far in 2025 than he averaged last season. In his one game against the Giants, he stung his former club, rushing for 176 yards and a touchdown and might be in line for a heavier workload on Thursday. The offensive line hasn't been able to get a major push up front, but Barkley needs more opportunities to be the driving force with the Eagles' passing game too hot and cold. The Giants can rush the passer, but they're really struggling to stop the run game, even with modest improvements recently, allowing 5.3 yards per rush.
2) Dart, Skattebo must protect the ball
The Giants' hope offensively lies in the hands of two rookies: QB Jaxson Dart and RB Cam Skattebo. Both were critical in the Giants' first victory of the season over the Chargers two weeks ago. Each was guilty of game-changing turnovers in Sunday’s loss at New Orleans. Dart had three, and Skattebo's fourth-quarter fumble in the red zone was run back for a TD. With Malik Nabers out, the Giants are counting on their rookie duo to produce, and they can't afford the turnovers. The Eagles have faced other agile QBs this season, but Dart can still make things happen as a scrambler. Skattebo has shown the ability to run through contact and gain extra yards, but ball security remains critical. The only game the Giants have won this season, they were plus-two in turnovers; they're minus-7 in the four losses. If they can move the ball Thursday, the Giants must convert. Right now, they're dead last in the NFL with a 31.6-percent red-zone TD conversion rate.
3) Eagles also hope to get Hurts, Brown on same page
The Eagles tried to get the deep ball working last week, but it just wasn't happening consistently enough. Jalen Hurts was 2 of 9 on deep passes (20-plus air yards) in Week 5 vs. Denver, per Next Gen Stats, the second-most deep pass attempts of Hurts' career in a game. He was 5 of 13 on deep passes in the first four games, but it's clear that he and A.J. Brown aren't in rhythm. Brown leads the Eagles with 36 targets but has only 19 catches, with DeVonta Smith leading the team in catches and yards and Dallas Goedert catching four of Hurts' seven TD passes. The Giants play the highest rate of man defense in the NFL this season at 47.2 percent, and the Eagles typically thrive vs. man defense. The Giants' pass-rush trio of Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux and Abdul Carter are a real concern against a beat-up Eagles line. But the Eagles also know they'll have chances to get Hurts and Brown going if the protection holds up.
