Philadelphia Eagles edge rusher Jonathan Greenard was ruled out for Sunday's game against the Washington Commanders with a pectoral injury, the Eagles announced Friday.
Greenard missed training camp after suffering the injury while lifting weights over the summer. Greenard called it a "freak thing" and said it did not require surgery. Greenard returned to practice for the first time Wednesday. Coach Nick Sirianni and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio described Greenard's status as day-to-day throughout the week. Greenard foreshadowed the final call, describing his recovery as "obviously, it's not 100 (percent)," while speaking at his locker for the first time Thursday.
Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt are scheduled to start in Greenard's absence. The Eagles also signed veterans A.J. Epenesa and Arnold Ebiketie in the offseason to provide additional depth to the rotation. The Eagles are being patient with Greenard -- and they can afford to.
The Commanders are weaker in pass protection with left tackle Laremy Tunsil on injured reserve, and the Eagles believe they can get enough production out of Hunt and Smith, plus their depth, which will give Greenard more time to recover.
Greenard intimated his recovery should not be much longer.
"We're close -- know that," Greenard said.
