Dennis Dixon released by Buffalo Bills

One day after Bills coach Doug Marrone made it clear that he wasn't "satisfied with the backup quarterback" position, heads are rolling in Buffalo.

The team on Monday released Dennis Dixon, the former Steelers and Ravens arm who earned surprise No. 2 duties in Saturday's ugly 27-14 preseason loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Dixon was one of 11 players released to slim the roster down to 75 in time for Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET deadline.

With quarterbacks Jeff Tuel and Thad Lewis still sitting behind the underwhelming EJ Manuel, we wouldn't be surprised to see another passer released as Buffalo keeps its eyes open for veteran help.

Marrone said Sunday that the Bills will do "whatever we have to do" to improve under center. Cycling through backups, though, doesn't get to the heart of the matter: Buffalo needs to use this season to make a final decision on Manuel, who hasn't resembled an NFL starter so far in Year 2.
