Chip Kelly: Tim Tebow improved, will compete

Is Chip Kelly's dalliance with Tim Tebow more than just an offseason lark?

When Tebow first signed with Philadelphia back in April, the other Eagles quarterbacks downplayed the "competition."

Mark Sanchez hinted that Tebow was merely a camp arm while Matt Barkley told reporters that his practice reps would not be affected in any way.

Now that the offseason program has wrapped up, though, it seems evident that Tebow is pushing for a roster spot.

"I have seen an improvement from Tim since the day we got him in terms of his knowledge of what we're doing, understanding where everybody is," Kelly said, via the Delaware County Times. "There's a whole process, and for him what we have done is different than what he's done anywhere else.

"So in terms of learning our terminology and how we do things, I think each week you've seen an incremental bump in him, so we're excited to see where that takes him and it'll be a good competition as we get into August."

Although no one is suggesting Tebow will compete with Sanchez and Sam Bradfordfor the starting job, his improvement on the practice field has not gone unnoticed among the beat writers.

When Tebow first arrived in Philadelphia, per the Allentown Morning Call, he "looked like a high school player." After two months in Kelly's offense, though, "he's improved steadily to the point where he's a legitimate threat to win the No. 3 job from Matt Barkley."

The competition for Barkley's job will play out on the field in August, just as Bradford and Sanchez battle for the opportunity to open the season under center.

That's more than we expected from Tebow when Kelly surprisingly pulled him out of the television studio in April.
