The Kansas City Chiefs are set to bring back a familiar face to their coaching staff.
The Chiefs plan to hire Eric Bieniemy as their next offensive coordinator, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported on Monday.
Bieniemy, who coached the Bears' running backs in 2025 following stints with UCLA (2024) and the Commanders (2023), previously spent 10 seasons working with head coach Andy Reid in Kansas City. He served as the Chiefs' running backs coach from 2013 to '17 before taking over as offensive coordinator in 2018 (Patrick Mahomes's first season as a full-time starter), a role he held through the 2022 season.
Matt Nagy, who replaced Bieniemy as OC in 2023, had his contract expire following the 2025 season. Nagy has been a popular candidate during this month's head coaching cycle and was not expected to return to K.C.
The Chiefs saw tremendous success with Bieniemy, finishing no lower than sixth in the NFL in scoring during his five seasons as OC. That stint included two Super Bowl titles and a strip to a third, while Mahomes twice won regular-season MVP honors.
Bieniemy left Kansas City following the franchise's win in Super Bowl LVII to become the Commanders offensive coordinator under head coach Ron Rivera and have the opportunity to call plays full-time.
Monday's reunion was quick in the making. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported earlier on Monday that the Chiefs had requested to interview Bieniemy for the position, and, fewer than 12 hour later, Bieniemy is expected to be back in K.C.
While he will return to a familiar setting, there are plenty of questions surrounding the Chiefs offense this offseason, including Travis Kelce's future and Mahomes' recovery from a torn ACL.
