Browns mine NFL draft for playmaker Trent Richardson

NEW YORK -- The Cleveland Browns knew they were in desperate need of a playmaker. It's been that way for years.

Brooks: Top 50 prospects

As teams finalize their big boards, Bucky Brooks reveals his final ranking of the top 50 prospects in the 2012 NFL Draft. **More ...**

Now they have one in running back Trent Richardson, who was taken with the third overall pick Thursday night at Radio City Music Hall.

Gregg Rosenthal wrote earlier that the Minnesota Vikings and general manager Rick Spielman were the first big winners of the night, stockpiling draft picks while moving back just one spot.

But the Browns win here as well. Richardson becomes the instant focal point of their offense, a versatile threat both rushing and receiving. Browns fans have waiting a long time for an exciting offensive star. Richardson should be it.

Time will tell if Colt McCoy is still the team's future at quarterback. But whoever is behind center will have the benefit of an impact player who -- despite what Jim Brown thinks -- has the potential to be a franchise star for years to come.
