No matter what quarterback the Browns wind up with next season, Hue Jackson plans on calling his own plays.
"Right now in my mind, I don't really plan on having an offensive coordinator, because I want to reserve that right to call plays," Cleveland's newly hired coach told Sirius XM NFL Radio this week, per The Plain Dealer. "That's something that's gotten me this job, so it's something that you're an expert at. You want to continue to work at that and keep that in your pocket so you can use it to help your team."
Jackson interviewed Pep Hamilton on Friday, but the former Colts play-caller would presumably take another role if added to the staff. After all, Jackson was hired to fix a Cleveland offense that has suffered for decades without the presence of a franchise passer.
"We need a very consistent and dominant quarterback," Jackson told Sirius on Thursday. "That's what this team has to have in order for us to be successful."
Those words strongly indicate that Johnny Manziel is out the door, especially after NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Jackson "insisted on" the Browns severing ties with the talented, but troubled, passer.Â
Plan for plenty of changes ahead in Cleveland.
