Brian Hoyer a trade target for New York Jets?

With the Jets and Ryan Fitzpatrick "still far apart" in contract negotiations, Gang Green is looking elsewhere for help at quarterback.

New York is among the teams sniffing around Colin Kaepernick, but if they don't land the 49ers passer, expect them to inquire about Texans signal-caller Brian Hoyer, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday.

Well-publicized interest in both Kaepernick and Hoyer makes sense: It puts the squeeze on Fitzpatrick's camp. Among the teams inquiring about Kaepernick -- the Browns and Broncos lead the way, per NFL Media columnist Michael Silver and Rapoport -- the Jets are seen as the least serious party.

Still, the Jets under general manager Mike Maccagnan have operated as a no-nonsense franchise, boldly swinging a trade last offseason for wideout Brandon Marshall and adding running back Matt Forte on Wednesday.

Fitzpatrick was surprisingly productive for the Jets last season, but Maccagnan and the team don't appear willing to overpay for a career journeyman. Hoyer would come cheap after the Texans put all their chips on the table to land former Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler.

The Jets also have Geno Smith on the roster, but he can't dream of matching Fitzpatrick's fit into this Chan Gailey-led attack. Hoyer -- a streaky operator -- isn't about to save the world, either. Sticking with Fitzpatrick still makes the most sense for the Jets.
