2016 Denver Broncos: 10 stats that defined the season

Now that the offseason is here, NFL Research is compiling 10 key stats for each team.

Here are 10 statistics that defined the 2016 Denver Broncos:

Stat #1

The Broncos did not win the AFC West for the first time since 2010. Denver's nine wins were its fewest since 2011, when the team went 8-8.

Stat #2

The 2016 Broncos were the first defending Super Bowl champion to miss the playoffs since the 2013 Ravens.

Stat #3

Denver ended the season with a 2-4 record against divisional opponents. It marked the first time since 2010 that Denver had a losing record vs. divisional foes.

Stat #4

The Broncos had a 9-2 record when they scored 20+ points. They were 0-5 when scoring fewer than 20 points.

Stat #5

Demaryius Thomas (2012-2016) joined Torry Holt (2002-2007) and Marvin Harrison (1999-2003) as the only players in NFL history with 5+ seasons of 90+ receptions and 1,000+ receiving yards.

Stat #6

Offensively, the Broncos were 31st in the NFL on third down, converting on only 34.2 precent of third-down opportunities.

Stat #7

The Broncos finished fourth in scoring defense, allowing 18.6 points per game.

Stat #8

Denver's 'No Fly Zone' kept its title as the NFL's best pass defense for the second straight season. Denver allowed just 185.8 pass yards per game in 2016.

Stat #9

The Broncos finished 28th in rushing defense, allowing 130.3 rush yards per game.

Stat #10

The Broncos were the third team in NFL history to change/lose their starting QB after winning the Super Bowl (others were 2001 Ravens and 1999 Broncos).
