Will Smith "wasn't surprised" the New Orleans Saintscut him this week.
The defensive end/linebacker told NFL Network's "NFL AM" on Friday that it was disappointing to see himself and three other veterans -- Jabari Greer, Roman Harper and Jonathan Vilma -- who helped the Saints to a Super Bowl XLIV win, all leave the organization together.
"It didn't make it emotional. It just made it a little sad knowing that all of us weren't going to be returning," Smith said. "Usually it's like one or two guys, but it was all four of us that were part of the Super Bowl-winning team. It was sad to see Jonathan moving on, Roman moving on, Jabari moving on. Me knowing that I possibly won't play with them ever again, I had a good time playing with those guys. They were great teammates."
Smith said he is nearing 100 percent after suffering an ACL tear last year. The 32-year-old plans on playing in 2014. He believes that he can play outside linebacker, but is better suited in a 4-3 defense.
"At heart, I'm a 4-3 defensive end. That's something I would like to play," Smith said. "But if I got to a team that requires me to play outside linebacker, I'm cool with that, too."
Smith has been highly productive in his nine seasons on the field -- including a 13-sack season during the 2009 Super Bowl run. However, he wasn't worth what his contract was in New Orleans.
As a pass rusher, Smith will be a good moderate-to-low-priced veteran buy on the open market, even coming off an ACL tear.
UPDATE: The Baltimore Sun reported Friday that Smith and Greer both were cut with failed physical designations.
