What we learned at the six minicamps this week

The last minicamps wrapped up this week. Yes, it's about to get slow in the NFL. Thankfully, we had six minicamps to over analyze this week. Here's what we learned at each one:

  1. Ryan Tannehill is third in line for the Dolphins quarterback competition. It's not just about the first team snaps. It's what Tannehill has done with those snaps this summer. It's not a surprise. He was always expected to take time. We'd be stunned if he was the Week 1 starter.
  1. It's hard to tell before tackling starts, but Chad Ochocinco is off to a solid start in Miami.
  1. Reggie Bush's role in Miam this year is going to look a lot like his role in New Orleans.
  1. We can't possibly summarize the week in Percy Harvin in one or two lines. He was upset, but no one knew why. He left and he returned to minicamp. Let's just say we expect him at training camp on time, and we expect some unexplained drama to pop up during the season.

Rapoport: Calm amid chaos

Amid the Percy Harvin storm, new GM Rick Spielman has taken the reins of the Viking ship, Ian Rapoport writes. More ...

  1. It's a good thing Harvin is back with the team because they would have to start Devin Aromashodu and Michael Jenkins in Week 1 if Harvin held out.
  1. Christian Ponderwon't have to compete for his job, as if there was ever any doubt.
  1. Chargers camp was quiet. Really quiet. Everyone is too happy and healthy. This team was more fun when A.J. Smith felt confident enough to make fun of other teams. This much we know: The Chargers expect a lot out of Eddie Royal in the slot this year.
  1. Antonio Gates is healthy. Norv Turner says it was Gates' best minicamp since Turner arrived.
  1. Michael Turner insists he didn't gain weight this offseason. But he's going to get fewer carries this year regardless.
  1. The Falcons are letting Lofa Tatupu and Akeem Dent battle it out to replace departed free agent Curtis Lofton at middle linebacker.
  1. The quarterback competition remains open between Jake Locker and Matt Hasselbeck, but pretty much everyone says Hasselbeck will be the pick.
  1. Chris Johnson missed a day of camp, but was back for the final two. He's going to bulk up to play at a slightly heavier weight this year.
  1. Kenny Britt (knee) and Kendall Wright (shoulder) were out of work. The team doesn't sound concerned about Wright. It's uncertain if Britt will be back for training camp.
  1. Shawne Merriman made it through the whole offseason fully healthy, even if he's now a backup defensive end.
  1. Donald Jones looks like the early favorite for the No. 2 receiver job in Buffalo. Stevie Johnson made it back on the field this week, so he should be ready to roll for camp following groin surgery.
  1. Tyler Thigpen is the underdog to Vince Young in the battle of the Buffalo backups.
