The Tennessee Titans begin their OTAs on Wednesday and offensive coordinator Chris Palmer plans to use this time to expand the team's playbook, Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean reported Sunday.
"You couldn't do more last year because you only had so many teaching opportunities," Palmer said. "Now you have more teaching opportunities and more time with the players and that gives you a chance.
"We've added a couple of plays that we didn't think we could teach last year. We're making some tweaks here and there based on trends in the league and things that are new and trying to adapt it to our players. So far, so good."
The Titans averaged 335 yards per game in 2011, an improvement of over 30 yards per game and 10 spots in the league rankings (27th to 17th). Surprisingly, the area the Titans improved most was in passing offense, increasing production by more than 50 yards per game despite having a new quarterback (Matt Hasselbeck) and losing No. 1 wide receiver Kenny Britt to a season-ending knee injury in Week 3.
Tennessee's running game, however struggled. Chris Johnson had a career-low 1,047 yards as the team slumped to 31st in rushing yards per game and 29th in yards per play. Palmer recognizes that improving in that area will lead to more wins.
"To score you have to be able to throw the ball, to win you have to be able to run," Palmer said. "You are going to hit some bad weather and we are going to have to be able to run the ball."
