Houston would like another crack at the Super Bowl.
The city last hosted the event in 2004, two years after the Texans came into the league. Houston received middling reviews as a host city, making it a distinct possibility the hoisting of the Lombardi Trophy in south Texas was a one-and-done proposition.
Undaunted, Harris County officials are now planning to bid on the 2017 Super Bowl. Houston Texans owner Bob McNair has (rightly) said it should be the job of civic leaders to lure Super Bowls to town, but cautioned that the fact Houston is not considered a tourist destination will up the challenge.
"When people start thinking about, `Where am I going to go on vacation this year?' they don't typically think about Houston," McNair said, according to The Associated Press. "We need to change that image. That's part of it."
(As many from Texas will tell you, good luck with that).
Houston is an underdog to secure the game, but it's shaping up as a Rocky Balboa kind of race, so who knows? Vikings owners Zygi and Mark Wilf are also considering a bid to bring the Super Bowl back to Minneapolis for the first time since 1992.
