Shawne Merriman home after being taken to hospital

Former NFL defensive end and linebacker Shawne Merriman is home after being taken to a Los Angeles hospital Sunday night.

The former San Diego Chargers and Buffalo Bills star was transported to Cedars Sinai Medical Center for an undisclosed "medical emergency," officer Mark Ro of the Los Angeles Police Department told NFL.com. Ro said the Los Angeles Fire Department actually transported Merriman, and no criminal report was filed.

The Los Angeles Times, which first reported the incident, later reported that Merriman overdosed and ingested an unspecified combination of alcohol and drugs. Citing law enforcement sources, the newspaper reported that Merriman was at a nightclub called The Colony at around 9:30 p.m. when the medical call was placed.

NFL Network's Akbar Gbajabiamila communicated with Merriman via text message early Monday morning. Merriman told Gbajabiamila he was headed home from the hospital.

The hospital is not releasing any information about Merriman's condition.

Merriman, who made three Pro Bowls, retired earlier this year after an eight-year NFL career.

UPDATE: Merriman's camp told TMZ on Monday that he was not treated for a drug overdose. "That's absurd," his rep said to TMZ.
