Free agency doesn't offer many riches, and the 2013 NFL Draft class is thin on gems. The drought under center makes two potential trade targets -- Alex Smith and Matt Flynn -- more attractive than they might be otherwise.
The San Francisco 49ersclearly are open to shopping Smith, and Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider isn't shooting down the possibility that Flynn could be on the market soon -- for the right price.
"We're going to listen to everything," Schneider told reporters Thursday at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Flynn was signed last March to solve the Seahawks' problems at quarterback, but he attempted just nine passes all season as rookie Russell Wilson calmly guided Seattle into the playoffs. There will be no competition under center this time around, but Flynn's relatively affordable $5.25 million price tag makes him logical trade bait.
Flynn also could be released if the Seahawks don't want to pay that kind of money for a backup, but Schneider said Seattle's primary plan includes keeping the quarterback on the roster in 2013. Schneider repeatedly said the organization is "blessed" to have two capable signal-callers but acknowledged Flynn might not feel so blessed.
"I don't think anybody in the National Football League's content to be a backup, so I wouldn't think he's content, no," Schneider said. "I think that he obviously would want an opportunity to start, and he's extremely confident in his abilities. That's why he came to Seattle. He wanted this to be his team."
