RG3 aims for Washington Redskins' season opener

By all accounts, Robert Griffin III continues to make positive strides in his return from reconstructive knee surgery.

Breer: Shanahan praises RG3

Mike Shanahan shares an eye-opening quote about Robert Griffin III's ability as a quarterback in this Albert Breer story. **More ...**

Dr. James Andrews, Griffin's orthopedic surgeon, said in March that the Washington Redskins quarterback's recovery has been "superhuman."

Still, uncertainty remains about whether Griffin's timetable will allow him to start the 2013 season on time. At Redskins organized team activities Thursday, Griffin was asked if he believed it would be possible to start Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles even if he doesn't take a snap during the preseason.

"I've thought about that and yeah, I would be comfortable with that," Griffin said, via The Washington Post. "That's all I can say. I have no control over whether I play in the preseason or not. I would be comfortable running out of the tunnel at FedEx Field with the smoke and everything."

Harrison: Top 20 Games of 2012

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan didn't shut down the idea.

"You'd have to practice ... not necessarily against an opponent," Shanahan said. "He'd have to work with the first-team offense and he'd have to have some practice time."

Shanahan roundly was criticized for staying with his quarterback too long in the Redskins' January playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks that ended with Griffin tearing his anterior cruciate ligament. Because of that, expect Shanahan especially to be cautious here.

Griffin has a great chance to start Week 1, but the Redskins aren't going to take any gambles with the face of their franchise. At least, not any more.
