The Indianapolis Colts are now looking north of the border in their never-ending quest for running backs.
The AFC South champions will work out Saskatchewan Roughriders tailback Kory Sheets next week, Arash Madani of Sportsnet.ca reported.
In his second CFL season, Sheets rushed for 1,598 yards on 287 carries while taking home Grey Cup MVP honors with 197 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the championship game.
Undrafted out of Purdue in 2009, Sheets spent time with the San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins before tearing his Achilles tendon in 2010. Although Sheets has just one NFL carry for five yards, his blazing speed made him an object of fascination with beat writers over two years on and off the Dolphins roster.
It's no surprise that the Colts are the first team to kick the tires on Sheets. General manager Ryan Grigson has shown a willingness to look under every nook and cranny for NFL-caliber talent.
His first move in Indianapolis was luring leading tackler Jerrell Freeman away from the Roughriders to start at inside linebacker. More recently, he took a flier on Kenyan rugby star Daniel Adongo, who had never played a down of football in his life.
If Grigson signs Sheets for the 2014 season, the 28-year-old likely will vie for a role returning kicks and functioning as a change-of-pace back on offense.
