Pro Bowl safety Dashon Goldson and the San Francisco 49ers aren't far apart on the base element of a new deal, but that doesn't mean it will get done.
A source told Comcast SportsNet Bay Area on Monday that Goldson wants a contract with an annual average of $8 million. The 49ers probably are not willing to go more than $7 million per year, the source said.
Goldson was given the 49ers' franchise tag earlier this year and is scheduled to earn $6.212 million on a one-year deal if the sides can't hammer out an agreement by July 16.
Secondary coach Ed Donatell isn't losing sleep over Goldson's situation.
"This happens all over football," Donatell said. "Nobody has a complete group. We have as complete as anybody. Anytime a guy can't play, we look for the advantage to train another guy to give you a Plan B and C and so forth. But his (Goldson's) history is, when he's ready to go, he's ready to go and he plays well."
With Goldson absent and fellow starter Donte Whitner sitting out practices, C.J. Spillman and rookie Trenton Robinson have received the majority of snaps in organized team activities.
