Reid elevates rookie Watkins to start at guard vs. Bills

With the 1-3 Eagles in a tailspin and Michael Vick feeling his share of heat this season behind a suspect offensive line, coach Andy Reid is making changes.

Rookie right guard Danny Watkins, the team's first-round pick out of Baylor, will make his first start Sunday on the road against the Bills, The News Journal reported Wednesday.

Reid, irritated with the play of guard Kyle DeVan in the team's loss to the Niners, wants to see if the rookie can provide a spark. Watkins practiced regularly with the first-team offense during training camp, but lost his job to DeVan and has yet to dress for a game this season.

The point is that Reid needs someone to play better than those who have dressed.

Yes, Philly is second in the league in rushing and ninth in passing -- far from a disaster on offense -- but they've stepped on their own toes from the start in a frustrating early season that few could have predicted.
