NFL VP: Man yelled obscenities at Matt Schaub's home

NFL vice president of security Jeff Miller confirmed Wednesday to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport that the league is aware of an incident at the home of Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub involving a fan.

"This is a little unusual in that we don't normally have fans acting in this way, going to a player's residence, that sort of thing," Miller said. "In this case, Monday afternoon a vehicle pulled into his driveway and an unidentified individual yelled obscenities. The police department is involved. We've been in contact with them, as we normally would for anything like this. And because it is a team issue, they have a security director. We work with them.

"In this case, they'll be working closely with the police department. But it's going to be investigated and handled seriously by the Houston Police Department."

Fred Davis of KILT-AM in Houston first reported that Schaub was confronted at his home by two fans. Houston Police said only that a family member reported seeing "a suspicious male in the driveway of the residence taking pictures." Police spokesman Victor Senties told NFL Media that patrol officers were not sent to the Schaub home.

It's believed that security has photos of the man, Rapoport noted.

Miller said the league will coordinate with team security to provide extra support because the story is in the public eye. He added that security can be provided for Schaub's family when he is traveling and they "don't need to be subjected to things like this."

This depressing incident adds to an uncertain week around the Texans. Coach Gary Kubiakleft the door open to replace Schaub as the team's starting quarterback when Kubiak last spoke with the media. T.J. Yates is the team's backup.

Kubiak took the rare step of addressing the entire team in a meeting Wednesday morning.

UPDATE: During a Wednesday news conference, Kubiak announced that Schaub will start Sunday against the Rams.

"It was a tough decision," Kubiak said. "Real tough. But I feel like it was the best thing for our football team this weekend."
