Immediately after the Green Bay Packers announced that Aaron Rodgerswould be out the rest of Monday night's game against the Chicago Bears with a shoulder injury, the Matt Flynn jokes/speculation began.
Coach Mike McCarthy was asked specifically about the possibility of bringing back Flynn, who coincidently was waived earlier in the day by the Buffalo Bills, if Rodgers is out long term. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday Rodgers is expected to miss four to six games with a fractured collarbone.
"Player acquisition, I've got nothing for you," McCarthy said. "I'm focused on Seneca Wallace."
McCarthy pointed out that Wallace hasn't seen a lot of practice reps, which helped lead to some of his struggles after being tossed into the fire.
Rapoport pointed out on NFL Network's "NFL Total Access" Monday night that the Packers stuck with Wallace when they had a chance to sign Flynn after he was cut by the Oakland Raiders earlier in the season.
Flynn made millions of dollars off essentially two big games while replacing Rodgers in 2010 and 2011, but he hasn't had nearly the same success outside of Green Bay.
The quarterback must pass through waivers before he is a free agent. Any team can put in a waiver claim on Flynn -- it's not inconceivable that a contending team might claim him to block a return to the Packers.
Other Packers options, Rapoport noted, are Vince Young and Scott Tolzien.
