Kellen Winslow suspended 4 games for PED violation

Kellen Winslow's comeback season is going to take a four-game break.

The NFL announced Friday that Winslow has been suspended without pay for four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances. Winslow's suspension begins immediately. He was not at practice Friday.

Winslow is eligible to return to the New York Jets' active roster Nov. 4, after their Week 9 game against New Orleans. Winslow leads the Jets in receptions this season with 17, although that says more about the Jets than it does about Winslow. He hardly was explosive at tight end, with only 9.9 yards per catch.

"It came as a huge surprise to me when I learned that I tested positive for a banned substance. I have investigated all possible sources since learning of the positive test, including possible medical causes, but frustratingly, I do not know the source," Winslow said in a statement.

The Jets recently claimed Zach Sudfeld off waivers from the New England Patriots. It looks like Sudfeld now will be active this week, backing up Jeff Cumberland. Wide receiver Santonio Holmes also is out this week.

It's worth wondering if the Jets even will take back Winslow after the suspension, especially if Sudfeld plays well. (Then again, the Jets are desperate for receivers. That's why they signed Winslow in the first place.)
