Juron Criner impressive in Oakland Raiders OTAs

The Oakland Raiders have used this offseason to stock the shelves with competition at the receiver position.

After adding free-agent wideout James Jones, general manager Reggie McKenzie went out and signed veteran Greg Little.

Despite the veteran influx, it's one of the squad's homegrown prospects turning heads out of the gate.

Steve Corkran of the Bay Area News Group reported that third-year target Juron Criner"far and away" stood out as "the best receiver on the field" during Monday's session.

Not a surprise in noncontact workouts considering Criner's freakish 6-foot-3, 224-pound frame. Still, his thin resume includes just 13 starts over two seasons and 19 career grabs.

It's the first we've heard of Criner since his sophomore effort was cut short in November with a shoulder injury that landed him on injured reserve.

Coach Dennis Allen noted last season that Criner needed to become more consistent in practice.

In a deeper group than Oakland's fielded in years, he's worth keeping an eye on. Criner, though, must first convince coaches that he deserves to steal snaps away from Andre Holmes and the drop-prone Little before we project this enigma for much work behind Jones and Rod Streater.
