Jets captain Holmes sorry for physical, mental letdowns

Santonio Holmes is listed as one of six Jets captains, though he certainly didn't play the part Sunday against the Eagles.

Holmes had a fumble and dropped pass that led to 14 Philadelphia points in what became an embarrassing 45-19 loss for New York. The receiver later drew a taunting penalty after a touchdown celebration. The Jets were trailing 28-9 at the time.

After the game, Holmes stood at the podium wearing a Superman shirt. To his credit, he took ownership of his mistakes, both physical and mental.

"Just being a vet, you can't do silly things like that," Holmes said, according to ESPN.com. "(It) cost our team 15 yards on special teams, giving those guys field position the way that they've been playing. I just can't do that."

Jets coach Rex Ryan expressed disappointment in the two turnovers Holmes was involved in Sunday, but he didn't address the penalty. When asked about it Monday, Ryan said Holmes came to him.

"He apologized that for that to me," Ryan said, according to the New York Daily News.

Ryan regularly calls Holmes his "best player," but being a great talent doesn't always translate to being a great leader. His foolish penalty Sunday, combined with the ill-advised criticism of his quarterback and offensive line earlier in the season, makes you wonder if Ryan regrets his decision to elevate Holmes to team captain.
