Isaac Redman's groin injury thins Steelers' backfield

The Pittsburgh Steelers' running back situation might go from thin to worse. Isaac Redman tried to practice the first time in a week Wednesday, but he wound up falling "painfully on all fours" before being attended to by trainers, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Redman revealed before practice that he would require an MRI on the groin Thursday, and then apparently made the problem worse. The Steelers already are practicing without starter Rashard Mendenhall, who is expected to miss the first six weeks of the season on the reserve/physically unable to perform list. Redman was the starter with Mendenhall out, but his availability has been spotty throughout camp

Redman is a solid professional. We're not so sure about his backups -- Jonathan Dwyer, rookie Chris Rainey and Baron Batch. New Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley might be forced to throw the ball like crazy early in the season if Redman's injury proves serious.

UPDATE: Redman left practice because of a sore hip in addition to his groin injury, according to Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
