HBO admits error in Steve Gleason's quote about Saints

Steve Gleason was back in the news this weekend, when HBO distributed comments by the former New Orleans Saints special teamer taken from an upcoming episode of their "Real Sports" series.

In the quotes released to the media, Gleason acknowledged that former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams went "over the line" in his infamous "Kill the head and the body will die speech" before January's divisional playoff matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.

Gleason was attributed to another quote in which he expressed surprise Saints players didn't react to Williams' fiery comments about targeting specific 49ers players.

"The real problem was no one seemed shocked," Gleason was quoted as saying. "There was no discussion of, 'Wow, did we just hear that?'"

Gleason said HBO incorrectly transcribed his comments, and now HBO is backing him up. The cable channel released a statement on Tuesday (via USA Today):

"Mr. Gleason has since informed HBO that what he actually said was: "No. The group I was with, no one seemed shocked." Mr. Gleason says that he was referring to a small group of people who were with him at the time, none of whom were active Saints players. HBO has corrected the subtitling of this line for tonight's broadcast."

Gleason has suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) -- Lou Gehrig's Disease -- since 2010. His speech has become increasingly slurred, leading to the misquote. The HBO profile airs Tuesday night at 9 p.m. ET.
