Gerald Sensabaugh retires with Dallas Cowboys

Gerald Sensabaugh drew interest from the Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans shortly after being released by the Dallas Cowboys in early March, but the safety's market has been quiet ever since.

The eight-year NFL veteran now has decided to hang up his spikes.

The Cowboys announced Thursday that Sensabaugh signed to a one-day contract to retire in Dallas.

Sensabaugh, originally drafted in the fifth round (157th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars, spent his last four seasons with the Cowboys. He started 84 of 112 career games, posting 469 tackles, two sacks, four forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and 14 interceptions.

Battling through knee, calf and head injuries, Sensabaugh's level of play fell off in 2012. Devoid of playmaking ability, he finished just ninth on the Cowboys in tackles and failed to record an interception.

Although Sensabaugh could have found a job between now and training camp, he had lost his interest in playing this season.

With Sensabaugh out of the picture, the Cowboys will rely heavily on young safeties J.J. Wilcox and Matt Johnson in Monte Kiffin's new defense. Their increased range should make up for their inexperience.
