Geno Smithno longer is grading his own practices, leaving that responsibility to the New York Jets' coaching staff.
As it turns out, the 39th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft passed all of his rookie minicamp tests with flying colors.
Smith showed improvement throughout the weekend, impressing with the "zip" on his passes and a natural feel for Marty Mornhinweg's offense.
Costello now notes a "sense around the Jets" that they want Smith to win the quarterback competition. That's hardly a surprising revelation. David Garrard hasn't thrown a pass in a regular-season game in three years. If the decision-makers still had faith in Mark Sanchez, Smith would be on another roster.
As long as Garrard stays healthy and Smith continues to progress at a steady rate, Sanchez will be the odd man out come September. The only question is if the Jets will find a trading partner willing to surrender a late-round draft pick for the veteran. If not, they will have to eat Sanchez's $8.5 million in guarantees.
