Michael Vick turning snippy in response to a reporter's question after Sunday's 24-23 loss to the San Francisco 49ers is just a microcosm of what's happening around Philadelphia right now.
Brotherly love has turned into disgust, the angst is amplified, and fans are calling for heads over the Eagles' "Dream Team" sitting at 1-3 and dead last in the NFC East.
"They will not win under this non-leader, (coach) Andy Reid," one caller said on WIP-AM. "They will not win anything. I'm just glad he wasn't in charge of D-Day. He is so horrible."
Said another caller: "It might be one of those dramatic situations where you look at your defense and you say a change needs to be made right now. And you look at (defensive coordinator) Juan Castillo and you say, listen, he's been a great soldier, a good guy, but this is not working."
Former Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell even chimed in on Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia's "Eagles Postgame Live" show, but somebody might want to teach him about a thing called perspective.
"Somebody's got to get angry, somebody's got to make a big hit, and then turn to everybody else and say, 'Come on,'" Rendell said. "When you're taking a hill, someone looks back and says, 'Let's go.' On Flight 93, that guy said, it will live in immortality, 'Let's roll.' Somebody's got to say that, and it looked like there's just no fire out there from the fans' standpoint."
Philly fans have a reputation for being a little nuts at times (as Rendell kind of proves), but who are we to say the callers are out of line here? The frustration is understandable (Rendell went too far, though).
For as great as Reid has been during his 13-year tenure, he hasn't produced a Super Bowl champion. With this most-talented team assembled for him, this was supposed to be the year. But wins somehow have been hard to find.
As for Castillo, this is basically the worst fears of Eagles fans coming true. Something seemed a little off about an offensive line coach taking over as defensive coordinator, and so far, things have panned out that way.
Bottom line: The Eagles spent money like crazy during the offseason, landing all the prized free agents you could think of -- Nnamdi Asomugha, Jason Babin, Cullen Jenkins, etc., etc. -- to form this "Dream Team," but all it has produced is one big nightmare for Philly fans.
Suffice to say Reid and Castillo won't be comped cheesesteaks at Pat's or Geno's anytime soon.
